Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has signed a new contract until 2030 with the option for a further year.

Brazil international Gomes had been attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham after an impressive campaign for the Premier League strugglers.

But the 24-year-old has now committed his future to the Midlands outfit after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Gomes arrived from boyhood club Flamengo in January 2023 and has since made 80 appearances, including four goals in 31 games this season.

Head coach Vitor Pereira said: “I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives 100% every time – in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step.

“At the end of the game he’s given everything for the team – defending, attacking, supporting the team-mates, and this is what we need in our team, this is the spirit we need at this club. We must come to Wolverhampton with this hunger, this spirit to help the team, help the club to grow up.

“He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”

Blow for Liverpool, Man Utd, Spurs

Gomes’ new deal has some slightly out of the blue after reports last month suggesting Liverpool were “close” to landing the midfielder for £50 million.

The playmaker has also been on United and Tottenham’s radar and looked set to one of a number of key stars to leave Molineux this summer.

Another was thought to be star striker Matheus Cunha but, like Gomes, the Brazil international agreed a new contract in January.
