Fresh off a stunning Euro U21 campaign with champions England, young Manchester City shot-stopper James Trafford has left the Etihad and joined Vincent Kompany’s revolution at Burnley in the wake of rapid progression while on loan at Bolton Wanderers in 2022-23.
As reported by Football Insider Fabrizio Romano, Trafford has officially agreed to join Kompany’s outfit at Turf Moor in a deal that will see City recoup £14m for their academy product, which could go as high as £19m after add-ons.

The 20-year-old England youth international became a hero overnight in service of his country for the Three Lions when his stoppage-time penalty save helped the nation win the U21 Euro for the third time in its history while ending a forty-year drought while being one of a number of English players to feature prominently in the Georgian-hosted tournament along with Levi Colwill, Anthony Gordon, and Emile Smith Rowe.
Most impressively, Trafford was part of an England side that kept a clean sheet in each of its six tournament wins while showing all the signs of a modern keeper. With Burnley investing heavily in their future under Kompany after building a young core that has been completely revamped under the Belgian icon while producing scintillating football to top the Championship on the way to promotion, Trafford seemingly fits the bill.
The Cockermouth-born keeper becomes the fifth signing for Burnley this summer, after Jordan Beyer, Dara O’Shea, Lawrence Vigouroux, and Michael Obafemi joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach, West Bromwich Albion, Leyton Orient, and Swansea City respectively.
