Mason Greenwood, 21, had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. But Greater Manchester Police announced on February 2 that Greenwood “no longer faces criminal proceedings”.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood and United have been conducting their own process as they “determine the next steps”.

United have spent almost five months mulling over Greenwood’s future and a club source insists they are focused on settling on an outcome before next season begins.

The Manchester Evening News report that Manchester United are leaning towards loaning Mason Greenwood with Erik ten Hag against selling the forward.

Greenwood is contracted to United until 2025, with the option of an additional year.

Greenwood has not returned to United’s Carrington training complex since the charges were dropped almost five months ago. In recent photographs, he was pictured training privately.
