Manchester United have learned how much they would have to pay to land Ivan Toney.

After Ollie Watkins departed for Aston Villa during the delayed summer transfer window in 2020, Brentford required fresh legs to replace a man who had netted 25 goals in 46 Championship outings.

The player the Bees settled on was Ivan Toney, whom they signed from League One outfit Peterborough.

Toney had notched 26 times in League One across the previous campaign, an impressive return.

But few were likely expecting the 25-year-old to prove quite as prolific as he proved in the Championship.

Across 45 appearances in the English 2nd-tier, Toney found the net on 31 occasions, as well as providing 10 assists. He also scored two in three as the Bees won the play-offs.

He would net 12 and assist five across 33 outings for Brentford as they fought off relegation.

So, when Manchester United were linked with the striker recently, fans of the Red Devils were probably fairly happy.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation. It is not all positive news though, as United have not submitted a proposal for Toney and are facing competition for the striker from Newcastle:

“Despite what you may have read, Manchester United have not submitted any proposals for Ivan Toney so far,” Romano revealed.

“Newcastle have had contacts in recent weeks but there is still no advanced negotiation. Brentford want at least £40-45m to sell Toney and the situation may evolve in the coming weeks.”
