Manchester United are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder being added to their squad this season.
Frenkie de Jong looked set to be that man early in the window, but hopes of United landing the Dutchman are now all but dead in the water, especially after recent comments from FC Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta:
“The first thing to say is we want Frenkie to stay at Barcelona and he wants to stay,” Laporta said.
“All we are doing with Frenkie is the same as the rest of the squad – but we can’t force him to take a pay cut. It’s his decision.”
Now, with a move for De Jong stalling, Manchester United appear to have earmarked Sangre as a potential alternative, with reports earlier this month claiming that talks between the Red Devils and Dutch outfit PSV are progressing for the midfielder, with a fee of €35-40m touted.
However, a fresh update from Dean Jones suggests that Manchester United are actually not close to landing Sangare and that PSV want him to sign a new deal:
Should United not sign De Jong or Sangre, Manchester United may have to go through 2022/23 with Fred and Scott McTominay as their holding midfielders.
