Liverpool’s hunt for midfield reinforcements ended in something of a mess this summer.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho left and the Reds struggled to add a third midfielder on top of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

They eventually got two late deals over the line to bolster their midfield ranks but one player has revealed why he turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool.

Liverpool missed out on signing Jesper Lindstrom despite the Danish midfielder being a boyhood fan of the Anfield giants.

Lindstrom signed for Serie A champions Napoli in a £30m switch from Eintracht Frankfurt with a number of clubs interested in his signature.

One of those was Liverpool, but Lindstrom has explained why he didn’t make the switch to Anfield:

“If I don’t play, then I may as well sit in front of the TV and watch them play there while I am at a different club. I am at an age now where I have to play football.

“This is why I think Napoli represent a good change. It is one of the best clubs in the world and they said I will have many opportunities to play.”
