For the entirety of the 2022 summer transfer window, Manchester United were linked with Frenkie de Jong.
However, the Red Devils did not appear to come close to agreeing a deal for the midfielder.
De Jong seemingly had no desire to leave Barcelona. One report even claimed that the midfielder had no interest in joining Manchester United because he dislikes the city and believes the club is run erratically.
Chelsea were also linked with the Dutchman during the summer, with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante both out of contract next year.
However, neither club was able to land De Jong and now, the player himself has explained why no transfer came to pass despite a lot of pressure being put on him to leave:
“I was calm,” he told Ziggo Sport via Marca. “I decided, in May, that I wanted to stay.
De Jong has since been used fairly regularly by Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona, featuring in every game this season barring two due to a muscle injury.
