Aubameyang left the Premier League for Barcelona less than a year ago after being frozen out by Mikel Arteta.
He went on to enjoy a prolific second half of 2021/22 at the Camp Nou, but is now likely to struggle for minutes this season.
Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha over the summer, meaning Aubameyang is unlikely to see regular football if he stays in Spain.
And, according to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are closing in on an Aubameyang switch: “They are in advanced talks to sign Aubameyang. The former Arsenal captain has been reluctant to leave Barcelona but Chelsea met his representatives last week in a bid to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.”
Should Aubameyang indeed join Chelsea, it will see him reunited with former coach, Thomas Tuchel.
The pair spent two seasons together at Borussia Dortmund and it led to Aubameyang’s most productive stint as a goalscorer.
During that time Aubameyang netted 39 goals and 12 assists in 2015/16 and 40 goals and five assists in 2016/17. These seasons remain Aubameyang’s best campaigns in terms of goalscoring and highlight why Tuchel wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
The former BVB boss seems to struggle to work well with natural centre-forwards – see Romelu Lukaku and Tammy Abraham – but as Aubameyang is also a capable winger, he may have more joy at the Bridge.
