Myles Garrett admitted he produced “the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there” during the Los Angeles Rams’ 27-7 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, revealing he was not fully fit for the game.
Garrett missed most of training camp while dealing with swelling in his knee, although Rams coach Sean McVay said before the game that, to his knowledge, the defensive star was 100% healthy.
The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year declined to reveal which knee was injured, but had worn a sleeve on his left leg during several practices.
Garrett struggled to make his usual impact against the 49ers, failing to record a tackle for the first time since Week 11 of the 2024 season and only the fourth time in his career.
The 30-year-old also managed just three individual pressures as the Rams pressured Brock Purdy on seven of his 36 dropbacks, a 19% pressure rate that was their third-lowest mark since the beginning of last season.
“I’ve got to be better,” Garrett said. “I’ve got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I’ve shown that I’ve been before.
“When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed,” he added. “I wasn’t who I needed to be for my team.”
Garrett joined the Rams this offseason after being traded from the Cleveland Browns, having set the NFL’s single-season sack record during the previous campaign.
Despite his struggles in Melbourne, 49ers left tackle Trent Williams said he could not tell that Garrett was carrying an injury.
“I mean, he’s one of those players where it’s just, you know, no matter what he’s going through, it’s still not an easy out for anybody,” Williams said.
