Aston Villa vs Fulham match preview

Will Aston Villa’s push for European qualification continue?

On Saturday, the Villans came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at the Brentford Community Stadium, thanks to Douglas Luiz’s late equaliser.

Before this, Unai Emery’s team had actually won five on the bounce, with this draw extending their unbeaten streak to nine.

So, Aston Villa kick off in sixth place, a point above Liverpool, knowing a victory here would see them leapfrog beleaguered Tottenham into fifth.

Fulham meanwhile were seemingly on the beach a fortnight ago, losing four successive league matches and experiencing that complete meltdown at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

However, Marco Silva’s side come into this clash following back-to-back wins, beating Everton 3-1 at Goodison before a 2-1 win over Leeds.

The Cottagers have therefore therefore risen into ninth, above both West London rivals Brentford and Chelsea, seeking to finish above the latter for the first time since 1983.

Fulham won the reverse fixture 3-0 in October, with Steven Gerrard sacked as Villa boss pretty much as the full time whistle sounded.

So, can the Whites complete a first league double over the Claret and Blue Army since 2013/14?

Aston Villa team news

Unai Emery could be set to name the exact same starting XI for the third game in a row.

Goalkeeper Emi Martínez did go offer injured at the weekend, with Robin Olsen coming on, but the Argentine World Cup winner is likely to be available.

Out-field, with Matty Cash still sidelined, 37 year old Ashley Young will continue at right-back.

Leander Dendoncker has come into the team in recent weeks and impressed, deputising for the injured Boubacar Kamara.

Ollie Watkins will be looking to add to his tally of 15 goals this season, having previously netted against Fulham for both Brentford and Villa.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Martínez; Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno; Douglas Luiz, Dendoncker, McGinn, Buendía, Ramsey; Watkins.

Fulham team news

This is the fifth game of Aleksandar Mitrović’s eight-match ban; he can next play against Southampton on 13 May.

In his absence, Bobby Decordova-Reid could continue to lead the line, chosen over Carlos Vinícius, although Dan James is an option, having been ineligible to face parent club Leeds.

At the back, Tosin Adarabioyo will continue to be Tim Ream’s partner, having usurped Issa Diop as first-choice in recent weeks.

João Palhinha leads the way in the Premier League for yellow cards, having been shown 11 in just 28 appearances.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Leno; Tete, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson; Palhinha, Reed, Wilson, Pereira, Willian; Decordova-Reid
