Match preview

West Ham United’s terrible Premier League form continues; could they actually get relegated?

Last weekend, the Hammers were smashed 4-0 by Brighton, putting in another shambolic performance.

So, having won just two of their last 13 Premier League outings, David Moyes’ men start the weekend a mere one point and one place above the relegation zone.

In stark contrast, the Irons’ perfect record in the Europa Conference League continued on Thursday, making it nine wins out of nine.

In midweek, Michail Antonio’s brace secured a 2-0 victory in Cyprus over AEK Larnaca in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

Of course, Hammers supporters are dreaming of winning that competition, but they also need to move further away from the bottom three.

Nevertheless, Unai Emery’s team will travel to East London full of confidence, having won back-to-back games, beating Everton 2-0 and then Crystal Palace 1-0.

Only the top two have taken more points than the Villans since Emery’s appointment, leaving them comfortably mid-table.

So, will Aston Villa claim their first away win over West Ham since 2011?

West Ham United team news

Michail Antonio did bag a brace on Thursday, but Danny Ings will be hoping to lead the line against the side who sold him in January.

Łukasz Fabiański remains out due to a fractured eye socket, so Alphonse Areola will continue to don the gloves.

Emerson, Ben Johnson, Angelo Ogbonna, Emerson, Lucas Paquetán and Jarrod Bowen will all return after being rotated in Larnaca.

Predicted XI (5-2-2-1): Areola; Johnson, Aguerd, Zouma, Ogbonna, Emerson; Rice, Paquetá; Bowen, Benrahma, Ings.

Aston Villa team news

In contrast, Unai Emery could name an unchanged line-up having had over a week to prepare.

Lucas Digne will be hoping to return at left-back, after new signing Álex Moreno started last week.

In attack, Leon Bailey had been a key player under Emery, but the Jamaican winger was only on the bench against Crystal Palace.

This could be the case again, after Emi Buendía’s sparkling performance.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Douglas Luiz, Kamara, McGinn, Ramsey; Buendía, Watkins.
