West Ham United vs Chelsea match preview

This is always a hotly-contested London derby and, this time, it’s the meeting of the Premier League club who can’t sign players, against the club who simply can’t stop making signings.

Back in June, West Ham United beat Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League Final, ending the club’s 43-year wait for silverware, but what has followed has been a summer of discontent.

Club captain Declan Rice has been sold to Arsenal, while the Hammers have struggled to spend the £105 million received from that deal.

On the field, David Moyes’ men did begin with a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday, with Jarrod Bowen scoring a stunning opener, only for the Cherries to equalise towards the end.

Now, in their first home game since enjoying European glory in Prague, could this London derby be just what West Ham need to relight the fire?

Chelsea meantime have been far busier in the transfer market, spending over £340 million, on top of the £600 million splashed by Todd Boehly throughout last season.

Axel Disasi firing home an equaliser, doing so on his debut, and, in the end, Chelsea were unlucky not to win a very entertaining opening Sunday affair.

After this, Chelsea’s next four fixtures are against Luton, AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, so there is an opportunity for Pochettino’s team to establish some momentum.

However, the London Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for the Blues, who’ve won just two of eight visits there, losing four of them.

So, will West Ham shock big-spending Chelsea as east meets west in this London derby?

West Ham United team news

Midfielders Edson Álvarez and James Ward-Prowse, who’ve arrived from Ajax and Southampton respectively, could make their West Ham debuts here.

Ward-Prowse scored at Stamford Bridge in each of the last two seasons, so could he net against Chelsea on his maiden Hammers’ appearance?

Alongside will be Lucas Paquetá, after his proposed move to Manchester City fell through.

In goal, Alphonse Areola surprisingly got the nod at Bournemouth, so does this suggest he’s succeeded Łukasz Fabiański as number one?

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Areola; Coufal, Aguerd, Zouma, Emerson; Ward-Prowse, Álvarez, Paquetá, Bowen, Benrahma; Antonio.

Chelsea team news

This week, Moisés Caicedo became the most expensive footballer in British history, arriving from Brighton for £115 million.

Four days later, Roméo Lavia joined from Southampton, so will either, or both, debut alongside Enzo Fernández in midfield?

In less good news, new club captain Reece James will be out for a few weeks, having suffered an injury against Liverpool, meaning Malo Gusto will deputise at right-back.

Carney Chukwuemeka could keep his place as the number ten, given that Christopher Nkunku is out long-term, in-behind Raheem Sterling and another new arrival Nicolas Jackson.

Robert Sánchez is the new number one, both literally and figuratively, after Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Real Madrid on loan on Monday.

Predicted XI (3-4-1-2): Sánchez; Disasi, Thiago Silva, Colwill; Gusto, Fernández, Caicedo, Chilwell; Chukwuemeka; Sterling, Jackson.
