Arsenal are eyeing up Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte as they look to find a replacement for Jurrien Timber in the wake of his injury.

The Gunners were handed a major blow in the first game of the new Premier League season as their summer arrival limped out of action early in the second half, havign to be replaced by Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Worst fears were later confirmed when it emerged that Timber will be out of action for some months after suffering a serious knee injury, and the Dutch defender is expected to require surgery, meaning that he will miss much of the season.

As a result, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are prepared to dip back into the transfer market to fix the issue, though whether it will be to sign a player on a loan basis or permanently remains unclear.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal will ‘explore the market’ and have identified Manchester City’s Laporte as a potential option, with the Spaniard having fallen yet further down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order following the mega-money arrival of Josko Gvardiol this summer.

However, he adds that a deal won’t be easy, mostly because ‘City aren’t keen on selling another player to Arsenal’ having almost seen them win the Premier League title last season following the arrivals of Etihad pair Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
