Sporting Kansas City boss Vermes after Sounders win: We are a good team

Alenis Vargas grabbed the winner with five minutes to go for the home side

Peter Vermes

Sporting Kansas City boss Peter Vermes insists he has a “good team” after they finally registered their first win in 10 games against the Seattle Sounders last night.

SKC came from behind to claim the three points – falling behind to Jordan Morris’ 12th-minute opener but levelling within seven minutes through Johnny Russell.

Reed Baker-Whiting’s red card with 17 minutes to go proved decisive with Alenis Vargas netting the winner after 85 minutes.

The win moved Vermes’ side up to 12th in the Western Conference albeit they still have plenty of work to do if they are to qualify for the play-offs.

He said: “I would say it was more of a version of who we are, right?”

“The whole idea is always to become, or try to get close to, the best version of yourself. And I think the guys were trying that.”

Vermes is hoping the win reinforces the team’s self-belief which he hinted had been lacking during their poor run.

“Look, I think this is a good team,” he added.

“The issue last year, which was a little bit different, for the longest time, I had to be the one that tried to keep telling them that. This win should reinforce that to them, that they’re good. When they want to play, they can play.

“Hopefully this is going to give us a little bit of a burst that we need.”
