United States will play for their fifth women’s football Olympic gold medal Brazil after beating Germany 1-0 in the semi-finals.
Sophia Smith scored the only goal of the game five minutes into extra-time after a goalless draw in normal time.
Emma Hayes’ side beat the Germans 4-1 in the group stage last week but this encounter was much more cagey affair as the Americans were held to their second 0-0 draw of the knockout stages.
Another 30 minutes ensued where Smith was able to find the breakthrough when she poked home Mallory Swanson’s threaded pass.
It was a victory built on some resolute defending by the four-time gold medallists, with Alyssa Naeher pulling off a game-winning stop by denying a headed effort with her foot.

Decorated former Chelsea boss Hayes now has the chance to bring home her first international title since taking the reigns just over two months ago.
Team USA will face Brazil after a 4-2 win in the semi-finals against Spain, who will take on Germany for bronze.
Brazil went ahead through Irene Paredes’ own goal before Gabi Portillo put them 2-0 up before half-time.
The Selecao added a third through Adriana before Kerolin sealed the win, with Salma Paralluelo scoring twice to reduce the deficit in stoppage time.
