Rookie Vikings QB McCarthy to undergo knee surgery

10th overall Draft pick set to go under the knife after pre-season bow

Vikings

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy will undergo knee surgery throwing his debut season into doubt.

The 21-year-old former Michigan Wolverines standout was selected with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft this summer.

After an eye-catching pre-season performance on Saturday, McCarthy missed Vikings practice on Monday and on Tuesday head coach Kevin O’Connell revealed investigations had uncovered to a torn meniscus in his right knee.

A timescale for his recovery will only be known once the severity of the tear is apparent – a minor tear could sideline him for a few weeks, a complete tear could end his season.

Former New York Jets QB Sam Darnold was named starter for the pre-season game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday.

McCarthy did come in under centre and went 11-for-17 for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Vikings can also call on passers Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens, though McCarthy himself sought to reassure fans on social media.
