NFL: Cowboys in ‘promising talks’ with Lamb and Prescott over contract extensions

The Dallas Cowboys are trying to tie down two of their most important players.

Dallas Cowboys general owner Jerry Jones says he is having “promising talks” with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott over contract extensions.

The new NFL season kicks off in a few weeks and the Texas-State side will face the Cleveland Browns on 8 September.

Negotiations between the three parties have been ongoing during the Cowboys’ training camp but there has not been a breakthrough as of now.

Reports suggest an offer has been made to Lamb that would make him the second-highest-paid WR in the league, but it is still said to be short of what he is after.

Justin Jefferson recently became the highest, earning $35million a season at the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaking to the media, Jones said: “I don’t mean that to be insensitive to our fans or to CeeDee, but we’re in good shape there and we are having promising talks.

“You say, ‘Well, why do you keep talking? Why don’t you do something?’ Again, as in anything, it takes both of you there at the same time.

“But I believe it’s got the proper amount of everything — emphasis, importance — for everybody involved here and we’ll see how it goes.”

Prescott should be easier to tie down, but nothing has been agreed with the 31-year-old.

Jones added: “One of the things that I’d like for the fans to really understand is that nine times out of 10, these are existing [contracts] that you have in place.

“And you should be able to operate under those but we’ve gotten it now in the NFL, other teams are dealing with it too, where with time left on the contract you still might have a contract discussion.

“That’s what we’re doing. But none of us, players or teams, want it to hurt the preparation or the likelihood of playing at your best opening day.”
