NFL: Lions end Seahawks’ unbeaten start in Monday Night thriller

The Lions and Seahawks both moved to 3-1 for the season.

Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions

The Seattle Seahawks suffered their first defeat of the season as the Detroit Lions claimed a 42-29 victory at home.

Jared Goff delivered a flawless game, completing all 18 of his passes – the most ever recorded in an NFL game without a single incompletion – along with two touchdown throws.

He also added his first career receiving touchdown.

Speaking after the match, Goff said: “It’s good when the ball doesn’t hit the ground.

“I wasn’t sure [of the record during the game]. I was trying to remember if I had any incomplete passes.

“I couldn’t quite tell, but I knew I had a chance.”

Following the result, both the Seahawks and the Lions now hold 3-1 records for the season.

Seattle’s quarterback Geno Smith also set personal records with 395 passing yards and 38 completions from 56 attempts.

He added one touchdown pass but also threw an interception.

The Lions jumped out to a 21-7 lead by half-time, thanks to touchdowns from Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

The Seahawks put in a good effort to come back in the match, getting within one score of Detroit, but Goff connected with Jameson Williams on a 70-yard touchdown pass, extending Detroit’s lead to 35-20 as they headed into the fourth quarter.

Seattle’s Kenneth Walker III narrowed the gap again with a 21-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, but Goff responded by finding Amon-Ra St. Brown in the end zone to close out the game for the Lions.

St. Brown had also thrown a pass to Goff earlier on a trick play that resulted in the quarterback’s first-ever receiving touchdown.

With the win, the Lions remain second in the NFC North behind the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.

Despite the loss, the Seahawks still sit atop the NFC West.
