Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has agreed to a two-year, $18.25 million contract extension, keeping him with the team until the 2027 season, according to a report from ESPN.
The new deal features $10.5 million in guaranteed money, making Montgomery the seventh-highest-paid running back in the NFL with an annual average of $9.125 million.
The Lions confirmed the extension on Saturday but did not disclose any financial details.
At 27, Montgomery had two years remaining on his current contract, but the Lions chose to secure their dynamic backfield duo – Montgomery and second-year player Jahmyr Gibbs- for the future.
So far this season, Montgomery has rushed for 271 yards and four touchdowns on 63 carries, while Gibbs has posted 285 yards and three touchdowns on 54 attempts.
Montgomery joined the Lions in 2023 as a free agent after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Well deserved, @montgomerdavid ✍️

Since then, he has started all 18 games in which he has played for Detroit.
After the Lions’ Week 4 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Gibbs expressed confidence in the pairing, saying: “I don’t think it’s close at all. We both can do everything, so it’s hard for defenses to scheme up against us. I mean the production speaks for itself, too.”
Montgomery has been on an impressive run, scoring a rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games, tying him with Billy Sims (1980-81) for the longest streak in Lions’ history.
Since joining the team, Montgomery has racked up 17 rushing touchdowns, placing him in a tie for fourth in the league during that period.
Only Derrick Henry, Raheem Mostert, and Kyren Williams (all with 18) have more.
