Dallas Cowboys owner Jones standing by coach McCarthy but admits ‘we’re in the s***’

It wasn't the 82nd birthday Jerry Jones had hoped for

Jerry Jones

Owner Jerry Jones admits the Dallas Cowboys are in the “s***” but has vowed to stick with under-pressure head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Cowboys are 0-3 at AT&T Stadium this season after a 47-9 thumping by the Detroit Lions yesterday, the heaviest home defeat of the Jones tenure.

“Generally speaking,” Jones said. “I think my message is – I know you don’t need to hear me say this – but I’m well aware that we’re in the proverbial s*** right now.”

Asked if this could have repercussions for McCarthy’s job, he added: “Oh, I haven’t even considered that. I’m not considering that. Just so you’re clear, I’m not considering that.”

Jones last made an in-season coaching change in 2010 when he fired Wade Phillips and brought in Jason Garrett but he insisted there were no parallels with this situation.

“That would be a hypothetical. In that matter, do you think I’m an idiot? Do you? OK. Well, I’m not going to be hypothetical with you about would I consider a coaching change in light of the timing we’re sitting here with. I’m not. At all,” he said.

Dallas are 3-3 overall heading into their bye week. They return in Week 8 with a difficult trip to the San Francisco 49ers.

Star quarterback Dak Prescott had another frustrating afternoon. He was 17-of-33 passing for 178 yards and no touchdowns. He also threw his third red zone turnover in two games at a critical juncture.

“I didn’t feel like there was another positive play after [the interception] for us to build off of to get anything going,” Prescott said. “Very frustrating.”

Prescott also standing by McCarthy

Prescott, who signed a new contract last month that made him the highest-paid NFL player in history, is also standing by McCarthy.

He said: “I’ll go to war for that guy, with that guy every single day. And I’m not the only one in that locker room. I feel like everybody feels that.

“If you heard what he said after that game – not something that I care to let you guys in on honestly – but strong message. Strong message. And in a loss to be able to feel that way, show those emotions and respond, I’ll follow him. I’ll follow him. And especially, I mean, I know he’s said it to you guys, he said it in there, he’s looking in the mirror, as we all should. Thankful for him as my coach. Period.”
