Fernando Gago makes Boca return

The former Argentina midfielder returns for a third spell at the club

Fernando Gago

Fernando Gago has returned to Boca Juniors after agreeing to become their new head coach.

Gago started his playing career with the Buenos Aires club in 2004 before moving to Europe with spells at Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia.

He rejoined Boca in 2013 but made just 85 appearances in five years due to a succession of injuries.

A short spell at Velez Sarsfield followed before he hung up his boots and went into coaching, starting out with Aldosivi before joining Racing Club.

At Racing he led the club to the 2022 Trofeo de Campeones de la Liga Profesional and the Supercopa Internacional.

He resigned in September 2023 before a spell at Chivas in Mexico.

The 38-year-old replaces Diego Martinez, who resigned last month. Boca are 10th in the Argentine top flight having won six of 17 league games.
