Chicago Bears fire Waldron, promote Brown

Thomas Brown steps up into the role having received the backing of Matt Eberflus

Shane Waldron

The Chicago Bears today fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in a bid to spark some life into their season.

The Bears sit with a 4-5 record thanks largely to a spluttering offense that has scored a total of just 27 points in their last three games, all of which have ended in defeat.

They also have the third lowest average yards per game with 277.6.

Waldron will be replaced by Thomas Brown, who has been promoted from passing game coordinator.

Waldron pays price for not getting best out of Williams

Waldron was hired by the Bears in January after three seasons in a similar role with the Seattle Seahawks and was primarily tasked with getting the best out of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

He has not succeeded, however, with Williams sitting 29th with a 38.4 QBR.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said: “After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense.

“This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully. I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.”

Brown is a bright offensive mind – Eberflus

Brown has previously spent time as the OC for the Carolina Panthers as well as a year as assistant head coach with the Los Angeles Rams from 2021 to 2022.

Eberflus said: “Thomas is a bright offensive mind who has experience calling plays with a collaborative mindset. I look forward to his leadership over our offensive coaching staff and his plan for our players.”

The Bears host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in an NFC North match-up.
