Xavi and Mascherano in frame to manage Lionel Messi at Inter Miami with Martino set to leave – reports

Current manager Gerardo Martino is set to depart Inter Miami for personal reasons

Xavi Messi

Former Barcelona stars Xavi and Mascherano are reportedly in the frame to become the new Inter Miami boss.

Inter are on the hunt for a new manager with current boss Gerardo Martino expected to announce his departure for personal reasons at a press conference on Friday.

The Argentinian led Miami to a record 74 points during the MLS regular season, earning them the Supporters Shield before they were eliminated in the play-offs by Atlanta United.

They are now on the hunt for a new boss and could be set to add to their strong Barcelona contingent, according to the Miami Herard.

Barca icon Lionel Messi is already captain of the Florida-based club, with their squad also boasting greats of the club Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

And it is now indicated that the two frontrunners for the managerial post are Messi and Co’s former team-mates Xavi and Mascherano.

Both were key players in Barca’s team which won multiple Champions League titles during the 2010s and are now forging managerial careers since hanging up their boots.

Xavi ended a two-and-a-half-year spell in charge of the Blaugrana in the summer, winning LaLiga in 2022-23.

Mascherano is currently in charge of Argentina’s Under-20 team, managing them at the Olympics over the summer.

Luring Xavi to the Sunshine State seems unlikely aftert the former Spain midfielder distances himself from the Manchester United and Roma jobs, reaffirming his desire to take a year-long break.

Fellow former Barcelona defender Sylvinho, who currently manages Albania, has also been named as a contender by Argentinian media.

Martino, 62, succeeded Phil Neville as Inter Miami boss in June 2023, winning the Leagues Cup early in his reign before their excellent league campaign in 2024.
