Mike McCarthy hailed the “tremendous fight” of the Dallas Cowboys as they edged a remarkable game against the Washington Commanders.
The Cowboys avoided their losing streak stretching to six games, albeit in unconventional circumstances, as they won 34-26 in Maryland.
They looked to be heading to overtime when Terry McLaurin connected with Jayden Daniels on an 86-yard touchdown with 33 seconds left, only for Austin Seibert to miss the extra-point attempt that would have tied the scores.
Seibert’s onside kick was then picked up by Dallas’ Juanyeh Thomas, who ran in for a 43-yard touchdown, and the Cowboys survived a last-gasp Hail Mary attempt from Daniels to clinch the win in a chaotic ending.

McCarthy, whose future in Dallas has been called into question, said: “We needed it. It’s been frustrating, no doubt.
“I think everybody in our circle has been very accountable for it. But I think you’re getting a look at who we are. Just tremendous fight. They fought from the time that ball was kicked off at the beginning all the way down to the end. That’s what this team is about. Hopefully, we can continue to get healthy.”
No let up as TNF looms
Next up for the Cowboys is Thursday’s clash with the New York Giants (2-9).
“We got to win this next one,” added McCarthy. “That was a division game. That was a big win for us. We got another one right around corner here. Nice to get some wins, get some momentum.”
After the Giants come the Cincinnati Bengals (4-7) and Carolina Panthers (3-8), giving the Cowboys (4-7) the chance to turn their season around and launch a late bid for a playoff spot.
Pass rusher Micah Parsons said: “Behind the eight ball. Let’s see how we can handle adversity and see if we can make a playoff run. But we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got to win game after game and consistently do that and play good for these next six games.”
