Lindsey Vonn comeback: ‘First race’ this weekend is ‘next step in incredible journey’, says USA ski icon

Team USA ski great and 2026 Winter Olympic Games hopeful Lindsey Vonn

Three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn has said her participation in races in Colorado this weekend represents “another step” on her potential path to the Winter Olympics in February 2026.

Five years since ending her career after 82 World Cup, the 40-year-old announced her return to the sport last month and will take part in a series of International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) lower-tier downhill and super-G races at Colorado’s Copper Mountain.

Lowering her ranking could allow her to enter World Cup races as a wildcard this season. “Technically, [it] will be my first race,” the American said on social media.

“But I’m using it as a training opportunity to keep on building. 100% will come in time, but not [on Saturday]. It’s been six years since I last raced so I still have a lot of equipment to test, finding my groove and really getting into racing form.”

Lindsey Vonn career

Vonn’s 18-year senior career included six editions of the World Championships – winning two gold medals in 2009 – and three consecutive World Cup titles between 2008 and 2010, with her fourth arriving in 2012.

She won downhill gold and Super-G bronze at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and downhill bronze at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.

A fifth Olympics outing could now be in store at the 2026 Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where Vonn won 12 World Cup races between 2008 and 2018.

Lindsey Vonn: Comeback ‘fun’

“I am having a lot of fun and want to keep on doing so,” said Vonn, who has been pain-free since a partial right-knee replacement in April. “Cheers to the next step in this incredible and exciting journey. Appreciate all of the amazing support.”

Retired ski racer Ted Ligety told The Associated Press that he expects Vonn to win. “From what I’ve heard, she’s been kicking [butt] and been really fast in training,” he added.

“Some of the women on the World Cup are going to be rudely awakened to have to compete against a Lindsey Vonn again.”

Lindsey Vonn boyfriend

Following her divorce from alpine skier Thomas Vonn in 2013 after six years of marriage, Vonn entered a relationship with golf icon Tiger Woods until 2015.

She dated NHL player PK Subban after meeting the hockey star in 2017, with the pair becoming engaged in August 2019 but separating the following year.

Since 2021, Vonn is widely reported to have been in a relationship with actor and tequila company founder Diego Osorio.

Lindsey Vonn net worth

Vonn is one of the richest athletes of all time according to Celebrity Net Worth, which estimates her fortune to be worth around $14 million.

She has held endorsements with companies including Red Bull, Beats by Dre, Oakley, Rolex, GoPro and Under Armour and is said to own multiple lucrative properties, including a Miami home worth a purported $10.5m and shared with Osorio.

Vonn describes herself as an Olympic champion, author, entrepreneur and investor and has her own charitable foundation named after her.
