Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick has made as his return to football as the head coach of the University of North Carolina.
The six-time Super Bowl winner has landed his first r0le since leaving the New England Patriots last year after 24 years with the franchise.
Belichick, 72, was interviewed by the Atlanta Falcons following his Patriots departure but will now look forward to coaching a college side for the first time.
During his time out of the spotlight, Belichick had fulfilled a number of broadcasting roles before accepting a three-year deal with the Tar Heels, worth a reported $30m (£23.5m).
His father Steve Belichick was an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina from 1953-55. The UONC has not won a conference title since 1980.
“I am excited for the opportunity. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times,” Belichick said.
“I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”
Belichick has previously spent his entire career in the NFL after beginning his coaching career in 1975 as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts.
He then won two Super Bowls as defensive co-ordinator of the New York Giants before becoming head coach of the Cleveland Bowns between 1991 and 1995.
Two brief stints in charge of the New York Jets followed, after which he toook over the Patriots, where he led the greatest NFL dynasty ever seen alongside quarter-back Tom Brady, winning six Super Bowls during an 18-year span.
