NFL: Bill Belichick calls for Lombardi Trophy to be renamed after Tom Brady

Bill Belichick has suggested the Vince Lombardi Trophy should be renamed after the legendary Tom Brady.

The Lombardi Trophy, awarded to the Super Bowl champions, is named after the iconic Green Bay Packers coach who guided his team to victory in the first two Super Bowls.

However, legendary coach Belichick believes the trophy should bear the name of a player rather than a coach – specifically, Brady.

Belichick won six Super Bowls alongside Brady during their time with the New England Patriots and suggested that the quarterback’s record-breaking success warrants such an honour.

Speaking on the Let’s Go! podcast, he said: “Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them.

“Players win games. You can’t win games without good players. I don’t care who the coach is, it’s impossible.

“Those are guys that won the games, man. I didn’t make any tackles. I didn’t make any kicks. That was [Adam] Vinatieri that made that kick in 4 inches of snow.

“You got to have good players, and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win. You want to put them in a position where if they go out there and play well, they’ll have a chance to win. That’s what Coach [Bill] Parcells taught me, is there’s always a way to win. You just got to figure out what it is, and you have to give the players a chance.”

Belichick was challenged on his stance by pointing out that the trophy is not named after Bart Starr, the quarterback who led the Packers in those first two Super Bowl victories, but after Lombardi himself.

Belichick, however, stood by his suggestion: “Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them.”

Brady’s achievements speak for themselves – six Super Bowl victories with New England and another with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with a record five Super Bowl MVP titles. Given his unparalleled legacy, Belichick’s idea is bound to spark debate in the football world.
