Jalen Hurts says the Philadelphia Eagles’ defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2023 Super Bowl “lit a great flame” in him and provided the motivation for his brilliant performance in New Orleans last night.
Hurts won Super Bowl 59 MVP honours after masterminding the Eagles’ 40-22 win and ending the Chiefs’ bid for an historic three-peat.

The 26-year-old completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 72 yards – the most ever in a Super Bowl by a quarterback – and a touchdown.
“Things come right on time. The last time around, it wasn’t our time, it wasn’t my time,” Hurts said. “Sometimes, you have to accept that you have to wait your turn.
“As great as the performance was [two years ago], it wasn’t enough to win. Going through those emotions and processing those things, that experience, lit a great flame in me and enhanced my desire to win.”

Eagles defense suffocates Mahomes
While Hurts sparked the offense, the Eagles defense got the better of Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked six times and threw a pick-six to rookie Cooper DeJean.
“The offense was able to score points and take advantage of opportunities, just enough to put points on the board, and the defense, the defense played their ass off,” Hurts said.
“They played how they played all year. I truly believe offense wins games and defense wins championships.”
Hurts exited with 2:52 to go in the final quarter and with the game won.
Brown hails brilliant Hurts
His performance was hailed by Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown, who said: “He played incredible.
“He did amazing. He was poised the whole game, he was in control, he made checks and he threw dimes. He just gave us opportunities, and when we were covered a little bit, he took off running – he used his legs.”
