Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy admitted his team are “in a hole” after their playoff hopes took a potentially fatal blow with defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals last night.
The Cowboys slipped to 5-8 after going down 27-20 in Arlington with cornerback Amani Oruwariye’s late error extinguishing their chances.
Oruwariye attempted to scoop up a deflected Bengals punt with less than two minutes to go but only succeeded in gifting it back to the road team, who then scored the go-ahead touchdown when Joe Burrow connected with Ja’Marr Chase.

Do the math – McCarthy
It was another setback for the injury-riddled Cowboys and one they may not recover from.
“Just do the math,” McCarthy said. “Obviously we’re not even back to even. We’re still in a hole. So we need a tremendous amount of help. Just being captain obvious here. This one stings. We had to have this one. That’s the way we approached it.”
McCarthy and his entire coaching team are out of contract at the end of the season and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked if he has some tough decisions to make.
Jones said: “I don’t weigh those things as far as tough or the degree of making them.
“I always in my role make those decisions, they all have a lot of gravity to them. Any of those kinds of decisions regarding coach coaching, staff players, all of those things, I don’t want to call them tough. They’re just very serious, impactful decisions.”
Overshown suffers serious injury
A miserable night for the Cowboys was compounded by a serious injury to linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who was trapped under a pile of bodies in the fourth quarter.
Reports suggest Overshown has suffered more than a ruptured ACL and he will undergo testing today.
McCarthy described it as “not good” and fellow linebacker Micah Parsons added: “I cried. It’s like my little bro, bro. He doesn’t deserve that, either. He really don’t.
“Just to understand what he’s going to go through and to be there for him physically, mentally. It’s just so challenging because of the year he was having. I really just don’t think that’s fair, either.”
