Dallas Cowboys ready to ‘ramp-up’ Lamb after star WR signs new deal

Lamb's holdout is now over and he will work out with the team ahead of the new NFL season

CeeDee Lamb

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy admitted to being “relieved” that the saga around CeeDee Lamb’s contract was now resolved and said the star wide-receiver would be part of the team going into “ramp-up mode” this week.

Lamb’s holdout is now over after he signed a four-year, $136million extension – the second largest deal for a non-quarterback in NFL history.

“I think, No. 1, is it’s great to get the contract in place and to have him back,” said McCarthy. “It was good to get this done. I think we’re all relieved.

“The talent has been extremely evident since this young man has stepped on a football field.

“Not only does he play every position on the offensive perimeter, but he’s also an exceptional returner, and he loves it. He loves being in the backfield and loves running the ball [as well]. He gives you that opportunity to not only take advantage of that schematically, but he’s damn good at all of it.”

Cowboys set for Frisco

The Cowboys open their NFL campaign against the Cleveland Browns on September 8 and will tonight host ‘Cowboys Night’ at The Star in Frisco to celebrate their return from training camp in Southern California.

The task now is to get Lamb up to speed as quickly as possible but McCarthy does not think it will be a problem.

He added: ”CeeDee, in particular, he can run forever. I mean he loves to run. This is a guy you have to cut him down at practice because he’ll keep going. That’s his general makeup. I’m actually more focused on not doing too much with him.

“Overall conditioning, I don’t think I’ll be concerned. It’s more the connection and the little things, the details. We’ve got to get back in running the routes, get back to 7-on-7 and team.

“He needs body on body, contested catches, have his contact balance tested. All those things you really only get playing football.”

Why is Lamb so special?

Lamb was taken with the 17th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft and has performed better than any of the storied franchise’s illustrious receivers, including Hall of Famers Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant in his first four seasons.

He has hauled in 395 receptions for 5,145 yards and had 18 100-yard games and in 2023 set the team record for most catches (135) and yards (1,749) breaking Irvin’s previous best marks.

Lamb had seven games with at least 11 catches last season, the most by a receiver in a season in NFL history. His 29 catches of 20 yards or more was tied for most in the league with Miami’s Tyreek Hill.

Lamb also had a 92-yard touchdown catch against the Detroit Lions, the second-longest reception in team history and furthest in 57 years, and finished last season with touchdowns in nine consecutive games to reach 32 across his first four seasons.
