Joey Bosa released by the Los Angeles Chargers

The pass rusher is set to be a wanted man in free agency

Joey Bosa

The Los Angeles Chargers have released Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa after nine years with the franchise.

The 29-year-old was selected with the number three pick by the Chargers in 2016 and will go down as one of the best defensive players in the team’s history, leaving with 72 regular-season sacks.

However, more recently he has been plagued with injury problems, making just 18 starts in the past three seasons.

Bosa set an NFL record with 19 sacks in his first 20 games and his important to the Chargers saw him handed a $135million, five-year contract extension in 2020 – the most lucrative for a defensive player at the time.

But the inability to get on the field has reduced his value and the Chargers will save $25.36m in cap space by moving him on.

Bosa was eager to remain with the Chargers for the remainder of his career but it is unlikely he will be short of options in free agency.

The San Francisco 49ers could make a move and pair Joey with his brother Nick, a prospect Joey described as “cool” earlier in the offseason.
