Kansas City Chiefs: Mahomes and Reid conjure up new ways to win

The Chiefs moved to 6-0 with a hard-fought win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs continue to find a way.

Beset by injuries to their leading offensive players, the Chiefs have gone from a team that dominated through the air to one that thrives via the running game and strong defense.

That was again evident as they repeated their Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers in February with a 28-18 win in California last night.

Andy Reid’s team moved to 6-0 with the only perfect record in the NFL.

Star quarterback Mahomes is now without a passing touchdown in back-to-back games for just the second time in his illustrious career. He threw for 154 yards against the Niners, the second fewest in a game he did not leave with an injury.

“I just don’t think it’s normal for what you’ve seen from us because there’s not a lot of passing touchdowns,” Mahomes said.

“There’s been a lot of turnovers, especially by me. I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team. It’s not just about me, it’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that. It’s about playing team football and I believe if we continue to work, we’ll get better offensively throwing the ball down the field.

“But until then, it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we’ve got a great defense and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”

Hunt leads the way

Kareem Hunt ran for two TDs to lead the Chiefs, who continue to play without star wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice while JuJu Smith-Schuster exited in the first half after aggravating a hamstring injury.

“We got plenty of room to improve on things,” Reid said. “Eventually guys will start coming back. But the thing I appreciate the most are guys stepping up and then the other guys trusting them to step up and believing in them.”

The Chiefs are on the road again next weekend when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders.
