Jacoby Brissett has been named the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots with head coach Jerod Mayo prioritizing experience over potential.
Brissett has made 48 career starts in the NFL and was seen as the logical choice coming into training camp. However, the form of Drake Maye – the number three overall pick in the draft – saw a shift in momentum that almost saw the rookie get the nod.

Ultimately, Brissett’s familiarity with an offensive playbook similar to the one he operated under at the Cleveland Browns means he will be under center when the Pats open their season against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 8.
Mayo said today: “I have decided Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season. As an organization, we’re 100 per cent behind Jacoby.
“There are a lot of factors that led to this choice. I think the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us our best chance to win right now.”

Maye still in the mix
He did leave the door ajar for Maye, however, adding: “I think it’s important to remember, what’s good for the team today may not be good for the team weeks down the line.
“I think the challenge is you want to win every single game now, but also you’re trying to build something special. So to me, that was a challenge.”
It has been reported Pats offensive coordinator Alex van Pelt was instrumental in the decision.
Van Pelt said last week: “There’s certain things in this offense that Jacoby, having played in this offense, understands. Some of the tools you can use to get you out of certain situations, pressure situations, things like that, that Drake is still learning.
“Jacoby has tons of experience, not just in the NFL but in this system, and we’ve won games with him in Cleveland, so I feel comfortable with his understanding (of the offense).”
