New York Jets hire Aaron Glenn as new head coach

The New York Jets have finally ended their protracted search for a new, permanent head coach.

After firing Robert Saleh in October and seeing their season peter out under temporary replacement Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets have hired Aaron Glenn per multiple reports.

Glenn moves back to New York after four years as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. He is well-known to Jets fans after being their first-round draft pick in 1994 and playing eight seasons in East Rutherford.

The 52-year-old emerged as the favorite for the role after Mike Vrabel opted to join the New England Patriots.

Glenn was interviewed for a second time at the team’s Florham Park facility on Tuesday and terms were reportedly agreed today.

Rebuild required

He faces a big job after the Jets, who went into the season with genuine playoff aspirations, slumped to a 5-12 record. They missed out on the postseason for the 14th straight year – the longest active drought in North American sports.

Although he specialized in defensive matters in Detroit under Dan Campbell, he stressed last week he is equally adept offensively.

“Here’s the one thing that I will say about myself, I’m a coach, I just happen to be on defense,” Glenn said.

“I understand the offense just as well as a number of people, so if you want to hire me, you’re going to hire a coach, you’re not going to hire a defensive coach. I’m going to talk to the offense just as much as I’m going to talk to the defense.”

Two of his first decisions will be to decide whether to bring back veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams.
