NFL: Cowboys set to snap up RB Dalvin Cook to practice squad

The running back could be called up to the Cowboys' roster for their NFL opener

Dalvin Cook

The Dallas Cowboys are set to sign running back Dalvin Cook, according to reports.

ESPN say Cook’s agency has confirmed to them that he will join up with the Cowboys’ practice squad.

Cowboys’ 53-man roster already includes running backs Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn and fullback Hunter Luepke.

As a member of the practice squad, Cook will be eligible to the gameday roster for Dallas’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns on September 8.

Players are allowed three elevations from the practice squad to the 46-man game-day roster, but they would need to be added to the 53-man roster after that to continue to be active.

The 29-year-old endured a disappointing season last year with the New York Jets and the Balitimore Ravens. With the Jets, he rushed for 214 yards on 3.2 yards per carry across 15 games.

He joined the Balitmore Ravens in January, where he rushed for 23 yards on eight carries in their divisional round victory against the Texans. However, he played no part in the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs.

A former second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Cook spent his first six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

In 73 games (72 starts) with the Vikings, he rushed for 5,993 yards and 47 TDs, caught 221 passes for 1,794 yards and five more scores, and has four career two-point conversions.

The Cowboys appeared thin in the backfield prior to Cook’s impending arrival. Elliott, 29 is back with the Cowboys after a one-year stint with the New England Patriots.
