NFL: Daniels labelled ‘the answer’ after guiding Commanders to win over Bengals

The Commanders are looking like a formidable team with their young squad.

Washington Commanders

After the performance Jayden Daniels put on during Washington’s 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football, it’s hard to argue that he has not been the standout rookie this season.

Daniels completed 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 27-yard strike to wide receiver Terry McLaurin while being hit by an oncoming defender.

Defensive tackle Jon Allen didn’t mince words when giving his verdict on the 23-year-old.

He simply said: “He is the answer.”

McLaurin added: “I think he grew up tonight. I’m so excited for him because now, as a rookie, once you see those throws, you get more confidence.

“And I think his confidence is just going through the roof right now.”

Washington have now won two games in a row, thanks in large part to the rookie’s contributions.

The team has scored on 14 straight drives that didn’t end in a kneel-down, and Daniels has been instrumental in driving this offensive success.

Through three games, he has completed 80.3% of his passes, throwing for 662 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Against the Bengals Daniels was called upon to convert three critical fourth downs.

A fourth-down pass to rookie receiver Luke McCaffrey resulted in a 30-yard gain, setting up Washington’s first touchdown and a fourth-and-one run early in the fourth quarter led to a field goal.

Daniels said: “It’s just a blessing that the coaching staff has faith in me to go out there and make a play in a critical moment.

“But that’s just a testament to not just me but the whole offense.”

Daniels capped off the night with his first signature moment,  launching a perfect throw that travelled 45 yards in the air, landing in McLaurin’s arms for a touchdown.

The receiver added: “When we needed it most, Jayden did a great job of taking a hit.

“Those are big-time throws for a rookie to make.”
