NFL franchise the New England Patriots have released veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The 27-year-old had signed a three-year $25million contract just over a year ago, when the Patriots still had iconic coach Bill Belichick at the helm.
At the time, Smith-Schuster was one of the top free agents on the market, but under Jerod Mayo, the Boston-based team are focusing more on youth infusion.
Rookie receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker were both given preferential treatment during training camp, meaning Smith-Schuster was always going to be up against getting a spot on the roaster.
Last season, he played 11 times in the NFL, totalling 29 catches and one touchdown.

He was part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning side in 2022 but believes the shorter off-season following that run affected him during his time with the Patriots.
In addition to Polk and Baker, New England have DeMario Douglas available as another option at WR, while veteran KJ. Osborn is also in Mayo’s plans.
The Pats played their pre-season opener in front of a home crowd on Thursday, beating the Carolina Panthers 17-3.
Smith-Schuster was on the field for 11 snaps but did not receive the ball once, which is in some ways a sad ending to his time in New England.
