NFL Review: Hill stars to help the Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars

Tyreek Hill had an eventful afternoon on and off the field as the Dolphins opened the 2024 season with a win

Tyreek Hill

Tyreek Hill had an afternoon to remember after being detained by police and then scoring a brilliant touchdown to help the Miami Dolphins to a 20-17 Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hill was pulled over by traffic officers on his way to Hard Rock Stadium with social media footage showing the wide receiver being placed in handcuffs and pinned to the ground.

After being released, he made a huge impact on the field, in particular a wonderful 80-yard pass play which saw him take a long throw from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and run in for a touchdown.

He then appeared to reenact his detainment with fellow wide receiver Jaylen Waddle walking behind as Hill held his arms behind his back, pretending he was in handcuffs.

Allen off to a strong start

Josh Allen rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more and 232 yards to guide the Buffalo Bills to a 34-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cards led 17-10 at the half but a 14-0 third quarter swung the game towards the home side with Allen prominent.

Derek Carr also looked sharp as the New Orleans Saints thrashed the Carolina Panthers 47-10.

Carr threw for three TDs, the highlight being a 59-yard pass for Rashid Shaheed to score, while running back Alvin Kamara also went into the end zone.

Debut to forget for Williams

Quarterback Caleb Williams had a tough introduction on his NFL debut even though his Chicago Bears emerged 24-17 winners over the Tennessee Titans.

Williams, the number one overall pick, managed just 93 yards on 14-of-29 passing with no touchdowns and was also sacked twice. Fortunately for him, strong defense and fine play from the special teams bailed him out.

The post-Bill Belichick era at the New England Patriots began with a surprise 16-10 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown to hand Jerod Mayo a morale-boosting victory.

Elsewhere, Justin Fields led the Pittsburgh Steelers to an impressive 18-10 victory at the Atlanta Falcons, the Houston Texans edged out the Indianapolis Colts 29-17 and the Minnesota Vikings enjoyed a comprehensive 28-6 win at the hapless New York Giants.
