Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb will not return from a long-term knee issue for at least the first four matches of the NFL season.

Chubb has been out for almost a year and has had two surgeries since suffering the injury against Pittsburgh in the second game of the Browns’ last campaign.

“I get to see him every day,” said team coach Kevin Stefanski. “He’s working very, very hard. The outlook for him is a day by day kind of thing.

“That’s how Nick operates, that’s how I operate. He’s a huge part of everything we’re doing, he’s in every meeting. There is no update other than to say that he’s working very hard.”

Nick Chubb injury

Four-time Pro Bowl player Chubb has been in the gym as his rehabilitation continues and was never considered likely to return in time for the Browns’ opening match at home to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday (4.25pm ET).

There is better news on right tackle Jack Conklin, who has come through physical tests on his comeback trail from a knee injury he sustained during the first match of last season.

Safety D’Anthony Bell, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and cornerback Greg Newsome II have also returned to practice.

“Injuries are part of this game and people have to rehab and work really hard to get back,” said Stefanski, emphasising that the players had remained involved in the team.

“Everything we do to get the team ready for this season… we’ve talked a lot about not wasting any of these days. All of it goes into getting ready.”

Cleveland Browns: Chubb comeback

Speaking in June, Chubb said he was “where I need to be” in his recovery. “Eventually, I’ll get to where I need to be,” he added.

“It’s definitely motivating to come out and see the guys practising.

“Just to be around, see the plays and get my mind back on football is important. It’s always hard not being able to play the game with your guys who you go through camp with.”
