The New England Patriots have released veteran linebacker and four-time captain Ja’Whaun Bentley, the club announced on Friday.
Bentley spent seven seasons in New England, signing as a fifth-round draft pick in 2018. He went on to feature in 83 regular season games, with 68 starts, registering 272 tackles.
The 28-year-old became the first four-time captain in Boilermakers history and was part of the Patriots team that defeated the Los Angeles Rams to win the Super Bowl in 2018.

Thank You for Everything‼️
It’s Been a Blessing 🖤🎱— JB (@NVBentley33) March 28, 2025
In a post on social media following the announcement, Bentley said: “New England. Thank You for Everything. It’s Been a Blessing.”
In recent times, Bentley has been hampered by injury. He tore his left pectoral muscle in Week 2 of last season and missed the remainder of the year.
At a season-ticket member event last weekend that confirmed he had recently been fully cleared.
However, speculation has been growing over Bentley’s spot in the team since early March when when the Patriots signed former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane on a three-year, $33 million contract.
