Protective order taken out against Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy – his lawyers say claim is ‘baseless’

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy has had a protective order taken out against him by the woman who accused him of attacking her last week.

The order was granted by a Texas judge despite the case being initially thrown out.

Worthy was arrested Friday and spent the night in a county jail on suspicion of ‘assault on a family or household member in which their breath was impeded’.

He was released Saturday morning after Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick decided there was a lack of evidence at that time.

The woman, Tia Jones, is pursuing the matter, however, and her attorneys released a statement to the Associated Press late Wednesday.

“Ms. Jones has chosen to use her voice to speak up for herself,” said Angelica Cogliano, who is representing the woman along with attorneys Addy Miro, Leslie Booker and Deniz Kadirhan.

“In doing so, she looks forward to the facts and circumstances of that night coming to light through the formal legal process and getting the justice that she deserves.”

Xavier Worthy’s attorneys reject the claims

Worthy’s attorneys insist their client is innocent of all charges and revealed the woman had been living with Worthy but had been asked to leave several times.

“She has refused to vacate the residence and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy,” attorneys Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett said.

“The complainant further destroyed a room in the residence, scratched Mr. Worthy’s face and ripped out parts of his hair, which there is photographic evidence of. Worthy told law enforcement at the time of the incident he did not want to press charges against the complainant.”

Worthy had a mixed first year with the Chiefs after being taken 28th in the draft.

He finished with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns, including two in the Super Bowl defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.
