The San Francisco 49ers threw away a 14-point lead to suffer a shambolic 27-24 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, a loss linebacker Fred Warner described as “unacceptable”.
The Niners appeared well set to claim a routine win only for an implosion that allowed the home team to secure a gritty triumph.

“It was unacceptable,” Warner said. “We can’t do that. We can’t beat ourselves. Can’t make those type of mistakes again. All three phases have got to play better. We’ll look at the tape, fix it and move on.”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has plenty to fix. His injury-depleted team made numerous basic errors, particularly on special teams and offense – none more so than Ronnie Bell’s inexplicable failure to complete a simple catch with 1:08 to go that would have put San Francisco in prime position for a game-winning field goal.
“We have to feel the loss, for sure,” defensive end Nick Bosa said. “Can’t just move on and act like it’s fine. Feel the loss and just start stacking week by week.
“Definitely a rough start, but there’s a ton of football to be played. We’ve been through some tough stretches before. We just have to stay together. We have the guys to do it.”

One man immune from criticism was quarterback Brock Purdy, who finished 22-of-30 for 292 yards and three touchdowns.
He stressed the need for calm despite a rough start to the season which leaves the 49ers with a 1-2 record.
“Obviously, it’s early in the season,” Purdy said. “But still, every game matters. We’re just going to take it one day at a time and not freak out about anything, but at the same time zone in on the stuff we need to get better at. And actually get better.
