Anthony Volpe: New York Yankees star ‘pretty much blacked out’ during World Series Game 4

No team has ever recovered from 3-0 behind in the World Series

Anthony Volpe said he had lived the dream of his friends and family after his grand slam helped the New York Yankees stay in the World Series – but warned his team that they have “a lot of work to do” to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the seven-game decider with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lifelong Yankee fan Volpe sent a Daniel Hudson slider over for the ninth World Series grand slam by a Yankee, ending a wait that had lasted since Tino Martinez achieved the feat in 1998.

“Definitely number one,” the 23-year-old replied when he was asked where hearing the crowd chant his name during the 11-4 win at Yankee Stadium ranked in the “coolest moments” of his life.

“It was just a big game. We wanted to go 1-0, win today and see where it took us. If we play the way we’re capable of playing… we have so much confidence.

“I pretty much blacked out as soon as I saw it go over the fence. We had so much confidence, with everyone going in, that we would win the play.”

In front of almost 50,000 fans, Volpe’s grand slam put his team 5-2 ahead for their first lead since the 10th inning of Game 1.

The Dodgers reduced the arrears to 5-4 before Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr, Luke Weaver and Tim Mayza put the home side out of sight.

Volpe described his relationship with Austin Wells, who scored a home run in the sixth innings, as “more of a brotherhood” than a friendship.

“We’ve been through it all together: the highest highs and, at some points, the lowest lows,” he explained. “I know he has my back through thick and thin.

“For him to have a moment like that is special, but to have it together – I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Dodgers vs Yankees

“[This was] my dream, but it was all my friends’ dreams, all my cousins’ dreams – probably my sister’s dream, too,” added Volpe.

“But winning the World Series was first and foremost, by far. Nothing else compares, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

The teams meet again in the same setting on Wednesday (8.08pm ET).
