MLB: Juan Soto seals record-breaking $765m deal with New York Mets

The York Mets have officially confirmed the deal

Juan Soto

Juan Soto has signed a $765m deal to join the New York Mets – the biggest contract in the history of sport.

The 15-year deal was completed on Wednesday after the Dominican completed a medical.

“This is a seminal moment in franchise history,” Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a statement.

“Juan Soto is a generational talent. He is not only bringing staggering historical statistics with him but also a championship pedigree.”

Soto had been chased by a number of franchises after becoming a free agent following his departure from the New York Yankees, where he had just enjoyed his best ever season.

Only three players hit more home runs than the 26-year-old, establishing himself as one of MLB’s brightest talents.

He helped them reach the 2024 World Series, which they lost 4-1 to the LA Dodgers.

Soto’s contract includes a $75m signing bonus and it eclipses the $700m 10-year contract that Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.

His deal is thought to be the highest deal in professional sport in terms of total value, above the likes of NFL duo Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes and soccer legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Yankees, according to the MLB, made a $760m offer over 16 years to re-sign Soto but were outbid by the Mets.

He had a 0.288 batting average in 157 regular-season games last season, having hit a career-high 41 home runs and 109 runs batted in (RBI).
