MLB: Yankees Fall To Tigers, Extending Their Losing Streak To Three Games

The Bronx Bombers have been outscored 16-6 over their last three contests.

The New York Yankees fell to the Detroit Tigers 5-0, bringing their record to 6-5 and extending their losing streak to three games after starting the season 6-2.

“A couple of times, we were probably a little aggressive early in the count,” explained Yankees manager Aaron Boone in a postgame interview. “But at the same time, it’s not the best thing to be falling behind aces. Once he (Tarik Skubal) got a little bit of a lead there and really goes on the attack, he put us on our heels a little bit.”

In six innings, Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal allowed four hits while striking out six batters. Though he had a good outing, the same could not be said for Yankees pitcher Carlos Carrasco, who allowed six hits and four earned runs in 4.1 innings.

“Obviously, they stung some balls against him,” Boone said. “It’s imperative that he really commands all of it. He’s got to have that elite command… He handled the top of the lineup today pretty well. But he’s gotta be near the edges with his split-change and his slider and strategically moving in the sinker and the four-seam. Probably just too many in the heart that they were able to take advantage of.”

“I think – command – just missed a couple of spots right there,” said Carrasco after the game. “When you have your command, everything is just completely different. I missed a couple of spots right there, and I got hurt.”

Carrasco wasn’t the only Yankees pitcher to be recently victimized by the Tigers. Carlos Rodón was lit up for five earned runs in the Bronx Bombers’ 6-2 loss to Detroit on Monday.

“It’s just baseball. There’s a couple of pitches I want back,” Rodón said in a postgame interview yesterday. “Bottom half of the order, I just got to go attack. It’s just frustrating that I’m falling behind those guys. I just need to be better with getting strike one and getting ahead of those guys.”

“I don’t know if I see highs and lows. I mean, we haven’t scored the last two days,” explained Aaron Boone. “We scored three or four or five, and people talk about us as a low. That’s just not reality. It’s a tough game to hit. We got shut down here these last – really – few days. Last day in Pittsburgh, Heaney shut us down, I felt like, a lot in those middle innings before we were able to rally late. Yesterday, I thought we had good at-bats. We didn’t put the points on the board… Today, Skubla got a lead and just beat us, period. It’s gonna happen. A chance to salvage a road trip tomorrow and hopefully come out and get Max (Fried) some runs and have a good trip home.”

The last contest of New York’s six-game road stand will take place against the Detroit Tigers tomorrow. The first pitch in that game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. EDT.
