NBA: 76ers star Embiid out for season with knee injury

The 30-year-old has has featured in less than half his team's games this season

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid faces off with a defender.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been ruled out for the rest of the NBA season because of injury, the club has confirmed.

Embiid, a seven-time All-Star, is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ongoing issue with his left knee. He has featured in just 19 of the 76ers’ 58 games so far this season.

The injury was aggravated during his team’s 105-103 loss to the Brooklyn Nets last week where Embiid played just over half an hour before sustaining a fall.

The 30-year-old had previously undergone surgery for a meniscus tear in the knee just over a year ago in February 2024, limiting him to just 39 games last term.

Prior to that, the Cameroon-born 2022-23 MVP had scored more points than minutes played in the 2023-24 season, a feat no player had accomplished since Wilt Chamberlain more than 60 years ago.

“After further evaluation, it has been determined that [Embiid] is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the 76ers, who are currently 12th in the Eastern Conference, said in a statement on Friday.

“We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan.

“The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”

Embiid’s injury comes just over a week after another high-profile NBA player, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, was likely ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Wembanyama, the number one draft pick in 2023, was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, making it highly unlikely that he will feature again this campaign.

Philadelphia are next in action when they host the Golden State Warriors this weekend.
