2010 Winter Olympics gold medalist Lindsey Vonn has said she is “making progress” and certain to have “fun” ahead of her latest step in a potential return to the Games with Team USA.

The 40-year-old is scheduled to race the downhill and Super G on in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany on Saturday as she continues her comeback from retirement.

“Excited to be back in the starting gate of another race again,” Vonn told her millions of social media followers, posing on the slopes with team-mates Lauren Macuga and Breezy Johnson.

“Slowly figuring things out one day at a time and making progress. No matter what the result, I’m going to have fun. Let’s go.”

Lindsey Vonn returns from retirement

Five years after ending her career following 82 World Cup wins, Vonn announced her return to the sport in November.

She took part in a series of International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) lower-tier downhill and super-G races at Colorado’s Copper Mountain in December and finished 14th in a race in Switzerland.

Sixth and fourth-placed finishes followed in races in Austria, but she crashed during training at a World Cup event in Italy last week.

The three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Cup overall champion is one of the most popular athletes in Team USA history and could be on a course to competing at the Winter Olympics in February 2026.

“I don’t know if it’s possible,” Vonn told AP after her crash. “I have to stay on my feet, unlike today. I have to keep things going and if I can make it, it would be a thrilling and a great way to kind of close the loop on my career — I guess the second chapter of my career.

“But I’m really trying not to think that far ahead. I have to stick with… just kind of building and getting everything dialed in.

“But I definitely am thinking about it and I hope that I can get there. I would never go past [2026]. It would be a great way to end things once and for all.”

A fifth Olympics outing could now be in store at the 2026 Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where Vonn won 12 World Cup races between 2008 and 2018.
