Paris 2024: Gymnast Chiles forced to return bronze medal won in floor final

Chiles originally placed fifth before being upgraded to bronze

Jordan Chiles

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has been stripped of the bronze medal she won in Monday’s floor final.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) conclded that the 23-year-old had been improperly judged after an appeal by Team USA which saw her score increase by 0.1, moving her from fifth to third.

Cas have ruled out that USA coach Cecile Landi’s appeal came one minute and four seconds after the score was posted, outside the one-minute window allowed by the International Gynmatics Federation.

Chiles’ original score has now been reinstated, with Romania’s Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea taking third and fourth respectively.

The final decision on reallocating the bronze was left in the hands of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who confirmed on Sunday that Barbosu would be given the medal.

A statement said: “The IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romania).

“We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.”

Chiles said on Instagram on Sunday that she would be “taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.”

USA Gymnastics released a statement saying it was devastated by the ruling, adding: “The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring.”

Chiles’ gymnastics teammate Simone Biles added: “Sending you so much love Jordan. Keep your chin up ‘Olympic champ’ we love you.”
