Former Manchester United star urges Cristiano Ronaldo to join Lionel Messi in MLS

Ronaldo is out of contract at the end of the Pro League season

Cristiano Ronaldo “has to go to America” and join Lionel Messi, according to his former Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown.

Ronaldo has continued to score goals at an incredible rate, netting 16 times in 18 games for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr this season despite the fact he turns 40 years of age next month.

He is out of contract at Al Nassr at the end of the season and has yet to negotiate a new deal.

Brown, who played alongside Ronaldo in the United side that won the Premier League and Champions League double in 2007-08, believes a spell in the US would be the perfect way for Ronaldo to end his career.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has to go to America, especially given that Lionel Messi is there as well,” Brown told The Sports Daily.

“I’ve seen Ronaldo play a few times and the standard is impressive; he is consistently finding the back of the net and appears remarkably fit for his age, still sprinting well at [nearly] 40 years old.”

Ronaldo nears 1000-goal landmark

Should he move to MLS, Ronaldo, who has also appeared for Sporting CP, Real Madrid and Juventus in a glittering career, would get the chance to smash the 1000 goal landmark.

He currently stands on 916 for club and country and Brown believes that may play into his thinking.

He added: “He has a burning desire to play for as long as possible, and he is a player with the privilege to choose where he wishes to play next. I don’t see him retiring anytime soon; he will keep on breaking records.”

Hello again Lionel!

Although he won’t be short of offers – and the smart money remains on him staying in Saudi – Ronaldo may relish the chance to renew acquaintances with Messi, with whom he shared an epic rivalry when the pair played for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Argentina captain Messi has made a huge impact on MLS, helping Inter Miami to the Supporters’ Shield last season only for them to fall to Atlanta United in the playoffs.
