LA Galaxy lift MLS Cup for the first time in ten years after defeating New York Red Bulls

LA Galaxy have been crowned champions for the sixth time

LA Galaxy won the 2024 MLS Cup for the first time in a decade following a 2-1 victory over New York Red Bulls at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles.

Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored for the Galaxy inside the opening 15-minutes before Sean Nealis pulled one back for the Red Bulls.

But LA, the most successful team in the competition’s history, held on to claim their sixth title in ten finals – and their first triumph since 2014 – to spark jubilant scenes at the full-time whistle.

For the Red Bulls, appearing in the final for the first time in 2008, their search for a first MLS Cup title goes on, despite beating defending champions Columbus Crew, city rivals New York City FC and Orlando City to secure their final spot this season.

However, LA Galaxy, who went into the game as favourites despite missing star man Riqui Puig through injury, will not be competing in next year’s expanded Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States.

Fifa awarded the US’ one spot to Inter Miami after Lionel Messi and co. claimed the 2024 Supporters’ Shield – the award given to the team with the highest points total in the regular season.

Inter were knocked out in the first round of the play-offs at the hands of Eastern Conference wildcard side Atlanta United.

The only other MLS team taking part in the Club World Cup is Seattle Sounders, by virtue of winning the 2022 Concacaf Champions League.
